CNN —Fiona O’Keeffe produced a stunning performance at the US Olympic Marathon Trials in Orlando on Saturday, smashing the previous record by more than three minutes. In her first-ever race over the 26.2-mile distance, O’Keeffe booked her spot at this year’s Paris Olympics as she crossed the line in 2:22:10, improving on Shalane Flanagan’s record of 2:25:38 set in 2012. Emily Sisson, the US women’s marathon record holder, and Dakotah Lindwurm finished in second and third respectively to complete the American women’s team for Paris. The 25-year-old became the youngest-ever winner of the women’s trials and the first woman to win the event on her marathon debut. “A lot of excitement, definitely some nerves kicking in,” O’Keeffe told reporters about her emotions on the final lap.

CNN —A Picasso masterpiece entitled “Femme à la montre” is expected to fetch more than $120 million when it goes up for auction this fall. Sotheby'sThe piece, which measures 51¼ x 38 inches (130 x 96.5 centimeters), depicts Picasso’s lover and “golden muse” Marie-Thérèse Walter, who featured in many of his portraits. In a statement announcing the sale, Julian Dawes, Sotheby’s head of Impressionist & Modern Art for the Americas, said: “Picasso’s ‘Femme à la Montre’ is a masterpiece by every measure. The artist painted “Femme à la montre” in August 1932, soon after the retrospective at the Galerie Georges Petit in Paris ended. Andy Warhol's 1986 self portrait will also be auctioned as part of Fisher Landau's collection.

CNN —A Picasso masterpiece entitled “Femme à la montre” fetched more than $139 million on Wednesday, becoming the second most valuable work by the artist ever sold at auction. The 1932 oil painting took center-stage at a two-day event at Sotheby’s in New York, at the sale of late philanthropist Emily Fisher Landau’s private collection. Though the quote is widely attributed to Yeats online, there is no record of him having ever written or said the line, said Susan O’Keeffe, the director of the Yeats Society Sligo in Sligo, Ireland. “The thing about Yeats that’s worth bearing in mind is that an awful lot of his letters and his articles and his essays were kept,” Ms. O’Keeffe said. The organizers “set out to do a good thing, and they have done a good thing,” she said. The organizers of the Dublin Marathon, which was established in 1980 and is sold out this year with 22,500 runners, have over the years used the medal design as a way to commemorate prominent figures who have contributed to Irish society. Some of the commentary this year has centered on “the view that this quote has never definitively been proven to be Yeats,” said Sinéad Galvin, a spokeswoman for the marathon.

MORE THAN a decade after the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art opened in 2011 in Bentonville, Ark., I found myself wondering if more art, culture and good food had followed in its wake. Founded by Alice Walton , daughter of Walmart founder Sam Walton, and designed by convention-flouting architect Moshe Safdie, the museum turned a spotlight on this southern city in the Ozarks. Named for the spring that feeds the two ponds that flank it, the museum holds work by artists such as Mark Rothko, Andy Warhol and Georgia O’Keeffe.

CNN —A 10-foot-high bronze spider has set a new auction record for a sculpture by a woman artist, Sotheby’s announced Friday. Louise Bourgeois’ 1996 “Spider,” which stands at over 10 feet tall and more than 18 feet across, sold for $32.8 million including fees at a sale in New York on Thursday evening. The sale also set a new auction record for a work by Bourgeois. In May 2019, another sold for $32.1 million with fees at Christie’s in New York. The sculpture sold on Thursday evening was previously owned by Brazil’s Fundação Itaú.

On the night of April 17, a crowd of 20- and 30-somethings, many of them queer, packed into Georgia Room, a Georgia O’Keeffe-inspired nightclub at the Freehand Hotel in Manhattan. They were there to drink and dance, but they hadn’t paid $25 each to grind or freestyle. More than 300 people — some in cowboy boots and 10-gallon hats and biceps-exposing denim vests — turned out for the sold-out event. The evening’s draw was Stud Country, a queer line-dancing and two-step class and party that usually takes place in Los Angeles. There, the event draws regulars and curious newcomers every Monday and Thursday to Club Bahia, a Latin joint in Echo Park.

In the spring of 1946 the Museum of Modern Art mounted its first solo exhibition of a female artist: a retrospective devoted to the work of the American painter Georgia O’Keeffe. O’Keeffe’s success owed much to Stieglitz’s promotion, especially his eroticized reading of her paintings of landscapes and semiabstract flowers as expressions of female sexuality. By 1929, O’Keeffe was quite well-off, thanks to Stieglitz’s efforts. Yet for nearly 80 years after O’Keeffe’s MoMA retrospective, the museum didn’t pay her much attention. Since 1946 its O’Keeffe holdings has risen lackadaisically to 13 works, including five from the artist’s foundation and bequest in the mid-90s.
